Intro

Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). STScI is located on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland and was established in 1981 as a community-based science center that is operated for NASA by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA).

The Challenge

STScI and NASA had the challenge of helping the world understand gravitational microlensing and it’s impact on exploration of the universe. To do this, they would need a video that would help by effectively communicate their discovery to the public, develop a message that will help people understand what gravitational microlensing is and it’s value, understand the relevance of Albert Einstein and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar’s theories, provide an understanding of blackholes, white dwarfs and the future of gravitational microlensing, and explain the value of tools such as Hubble, the James Web Space Telescope, and WFIRST for future space exploration.

The Solutions

In August, the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI), in partnership with NASA, collaborated with MOJO to create a 30+ Minute Documentary of Gravitational Microlensing with key scientist on the project, design a custom website landing page to highlight the lead scientist on the project, Kailash Sahu, and to design a custom website landing page to promote the Gravitational Microlensing project as a whole. After three weeks of pre production, script writing, and planning, MOJO’s team would spend one (1) week on location filming the critical interviews, experiments, and b-roll footage needed to tell STScI and NASA’s story. MOJO completed the post production editing over 60 days, the website landing pages simultaneously and launched the project in March of 2019.

The Results

The outcome was a successful one—we came up with a 36-minute documentary about the importance of gravitational microlensing, its advancements, and the role it will play in the future of understanding our solar system. Along with the documentary, we also created two custom-designed websites—one for the STScI Gravitational Microlensing Documentary and one of Kailash Sahu.

MOJO design and launched two fully custom landing pages to support the marketing and grant requirements to promote STScI/NASA’s story for gravitational microlensing. With planning and collaboration from Kailash Chandra Sahu, we launched these websites, graphics design, and copy to compliment the documentary.
